After World War II, the Allies didn’t just put Nazi leaders on trial — they also studied them.

During the Nuremberg Trials, Allied psychologists administered standardized IQ tests to captured Nazi officials. The results stunned many observers.

The average IQ was 128, well above the population average.

Some of the highest scores included:
• Hjalmar Schacht — IQ 143
• Arthur Seyss-Inquart — IQ 141
• Hermann Göring — IQ 138

Even the lowest score, Julius Streicher at 106, was still considered average.

The findings shattered the comforting myth that great atrocities are only committed by the ignorant or uneducated. These men were not unintelligent — many were highly capable, articulate, and strategic. Their crimes were driven by ideology, ambition, obedience, and moral collapse, not lack of intelligence.

Historians and psychologists later emphasized a sobering conclusion:
intelligence does not equal morality.

The Nuremberg psychological evaluations remain one of the most unsettling reminders that education and intellect alone are not safeguards against radicalization, cruelty, or participation in mass violence.
