Brenden's Story

A nine-year-old boy, Brenden Scott, was crossing a street to go to is friend’s house on December 9, 2018 when a minivan traveling at a high speed hit him.

Director of Sparrow Children’s Center Stephen Guertin, M.D., and Christen Kegarise, D.O., of Emergency Medicine describe the state Brenden was in when he arrived at the hospital. Brenden was comatose and had broken the parts of his face, jaw, and both femurs. There was hemorrhaging in his brain and his lung was bruised, bleeding, and perforated. Brenden’s heart stopped on the operating table.

Trauma Surgeon Paul Schneider, M.D., and Anesthesiologist Joel Barton, M.D., explain the team’s quick actions to keep his heart pumping. Clinical Laboratory Scientists Jaclyn Fryer and Debra Cooper discuss the procedures for replenishing Brenden’s blood supply that night.

Interventional Radiologist Robert Saltzman, M.D., explains how he found and stopped Brenden’s bleeding to stabilize blood pressure so the team could get Brenden to Sparrow Pediatric ICU.

The care team didn’t know if the boy would survive or what his quality of life would look like if he did. Surgical Services Nurse Monica Sinicropi, BSN, RN, talks about her joy when she saw Brenden alive and fighting the next morning. Sarah Marchand, D.O., of Emergency Medicine talks about the incredible improvements Brenden made in a short time.

Brenden woke up on Day 5 on life support and began responding to commands. On Day 16, Brenden got to celebrate Christmas with his family – still on life support – when he smiled for the first time. On Day 20, Brenden was able to mouth words to indicate what he wanted. On Day 25, Brenden was taken off life support and spoke for the first time.

Brenden spent three weeks at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids before coming home.

Monica Sinicropi, BSN, RN, discusses the support that went into saving Brenden’s life and how Sparrow’s values shined through that night. Sparrow Caregivers from Sparrow Emergency Medicine, Sparrow Radiology, Sparrow Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Sparrow Operating Room, Sparrow Anesthesia, Sparrow Occupational Therapy, Sparrow Physical Therapy, Sparrow Speech Therapy, Sparrow Nutrition, and more all had an impact Brenden Scott’s recovery.
