In the 1950s, John Biggers was commissioned to paint a mural depicting the Black longshoremen of Houston. That very same mural is now in the hallways of the International Association of Longshoremen’s Local 24, which is getting ready to commemorate the 40th anniversary since the integration of its Black and White local unions. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, went to Pasadena to visit Local 24’s headquarters and to talk to the men and women who work at the Port of Houston and for whom the mural holds a special place in their hearts.

The MFAH has in its permanent collection a preparatory drawing Biggers created for the mural: https://emuseum.mfah.org/objects/27682/
