How is recovery after chemoport insertion?
Chemoport insertion is a minor surgical procedure with a quick recovery. Most patients are discharged the same or next day. Mild pain and discomfort are common and manageable with medication.
Which anesthesia is used for chemoport insertion?
Chemoport is inserted under general or local anesthesia with sedation. The choice depends on the patient’s body type and preferences. Surgeon preference also plays a key role in the decision.
When can you go home after chemoport surgery?
Patients are usually discharged on the same day or the next day. Medical advice is provided based on the individual's condition. Basic post-surgery precautions are also explained before discharge.
What care is needed in the first 48 hours?
Avoid bathing for the first 2 days post-surgery. Only sponge baths are allowed while keeping the operated area dry. Waterproof dressings help reduce infection risk during this time.
When is the wound dressing changed?
The patient is called back the next day for a wound check. Waterproof dressings are replaced after evaluating the healing. If everything looks fine, the new dressing allows safe showering.
What are signs of infection after chemoport placement?
Redness, swelling, or unrelieved pain at the chemoport site can be warning signs. If symptoms persist despite medication, consult your doctor immediately. Early checkup helps avoid complications.
When are stitches removed after chemoport surgery?
Dissolvable stitches are used in most cases. Around day 10, we remove dressings and cut suture knots. No further dressing is needed after that, and full activity clearance is given.
Can you sleep on the side with a chemoport?
Sleeping on your back is ideal during initial recovery. Avoid lying on the side with the chemoport to prevent pressure. Never sleep on your stomach as it increases the risk of complications.
What activities should you avoid after chemoport insertion?
Avoid shoulder bags, tight seatbelts, gym, swimming, and heavy lifting. These can put pressure on the chemoport and delay healing. Such activities are restricted for at least 2 months.
