A STABBING TELEPHATIC AFFAIR - OR RATHER TWO!
Spend a couple of hours in the the company of these two beauties, my blonde 1982 Fender Telecaster '52 american reissue and olympic white 2006 Mexican Fender Telecaster 60s player. Both have had the bridge pickup replaced with a Seymoru Duncan ATPL-1 BK (not Seymour Duncan Antiquity as claimed by me in this video). Certainly there are similarities, but still they are very different guitars. The '52 blonde has got that classic twang in the bass strings and sparkling stingy attack of the high strings, whereas the white 2006 with the rosewood neck is more of a classic all round rock guitar. Sure, if I need a more countryish or rockabilly twangy classic sound the '52 reissue is the thing. It is definitely also my favourite player of the two. The white one is a more recent low-cost guitar that surely has not seen as many playing hours as the blonde and that really goes to show in the way it feels when you pick it up. Although I have always preferred rosewood necks compared to maple neck, both regarding look and feel. To put it shortly, maple necks looks colder, sounds colder and feels colder - simple as that. But if we are talking classic twangy Tele sound, the maple neck's the thing. You can hear the '52 reissue featured on two particular tracks by The Beatophonics. One is "Let's Talk About Us" from our debut album for a classic crunchy Tele sound. On the recent "Let's Do This" Album it is featured with a more mordern-like, heavy compressed sound on "What Became Of You". Although I know most people probably associate a blonde maple necked 50s Tele with a certain american singer-songwriter known as The Boss (I do, too :-)), I have to say that it was after hearing the same type of guitar in the hands of Squeeze singer/guitarist/songwriter Glenn Tilbrook on the Squeeze live album "A Round And A Bout", that I knew exactly what I was looking for in a Tele. And I certainly found it in this one. The white one was acquired mainly to do fly ins with The Beatophonics. I needed a cheaper, not so fragile and certainly not so rare guitar, that could go "in the hole" without me biting my nails off upstairs in the cabin. Still, it's a good working guitar and with a little modification (bridge pickup has been replaced) it will do. But it certainly could do with +25 years of heavy touring and beating up to make it feel "played in", which is an important difference between these two guitars
