Both Red Bull AlphaTauri AF Corse drivers excel during exciting weekend in Zolder.
The Red Bull AlphaTauri AF Corse team showed impressive pace once again as Kiwi Liam Lawson and Alex Albon both secured podium finishes at the third race weekend of the DTM season in Zolder, Belgium.
In Saturday’s race, Albon made an impressive fight back in the Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo 2020. Having qualified in fourth, the Thai driver had to start in ninth after receiving a five-place grid penalty for a rule violation.
However, thanks to a good strategy, a series of fast laps and a late pit stop, Albon managed to climb to third place to claim his second podium of the season. Team-mate Lawson had started in tenth but was unable to add to the points haul after a collision forced him to retire from the race.
On Sunday, both drivers were unfortunate in qualifying as a red flag towards the end of the session forced them to abort their flying laps. The result was sixth place on the grid for Lawson and eleventh for Albon.
Both drivers made consistent progress through the field, with Lawson securing third – his fourth podium finish in six races – and Albon taking sixth place.
Lawson said: “Saturday’s race was obviously disappointing as we lost a lot of points in the championship, but as a driver it’s always important to just move on after such a bad race. Regarding Sunday, I am really happy with the points we scored finishing third.”
Albon added: “All in all I am happy with how the weekend went. It was definitely a step forward for me in understanding the car better. Still, I feel there were a few missed opportunities, but scoring points in both races and finishing on the podium on Saturday – all good.”
In the Drivers’ standings, Lawson is second with 80 points and Albon remains in fifth position with 54 points. Red Bull AlphaTauri AF Corse are second in the Team standings with 134 points after six races, just 13 points behind the leaders.
Next in the 2021 DTM season is the Nürburgring in Germany from August 20-22.
