Pluralism lies at the heart of the idea of India, and as Professor Tanweer Fazal notes, the founders, once free of colonial chains sought to realise just that, through a vision of a non-denominational secular republic. In the recent years, however, such a vision has come to be increasingly distraught, by aspects of majoritarianism in politics. Professor Fazal’s book in this scenario traces the nuances of the same, shedding light on the “behavioural dimension of the state vis a vis the margin, in this case the Indian Muslim”. With all the recent breaches and distortions in the foundational idea of India in the current political climate of singularised politics, the threat of democratic backsliding looms large, the social fabric being painted over by monochromatic nationalism. As Professor Fazal points out, it is perhaps high time that we excavate the past in order to comprehend the present and ask – What turn of events, processes, relics and forces of history abetted the rise of this brute majoritarianism?
