Components of GIS ----
basically there are various different components of gis :
1- computer system
2- data
3- user

1st components of gis is computer system which is further sub-divided into three parts :
a) hardware
b) software
c) procedure

HARDWARE - It consist of computer hardware system on which the GIS software runs. The GIS runs on the whole spectrum of computer system ranging from portable personal computers (PCs) to multi-user supercomputers. the hardware for GIS consist of input devices such as digitizers, scanners and GPS receivers, the stroage devices such as magnetic tapes and disks, CD ROMs and other optical disks.

SOFTWARE - Software refers to the program run on computers; these includes progam to manage the computer & to perform specific functions. The GIS software provides the function and tools that are necessary to store, analyze & display geographic information. Some common GIS softwares are ArcGIS,Mapinfo, Geometrica etc.

PROCEDURES - A computer system for GIS consist of hardware, software & procedures designed to support the data capture, storage, processing, modeling, analysis & display to geospatial data. Beside the technical components like hardware, software & database, institutional framework & policies are also important for functional GIS.

2nd components of gis is Data ------Data are named as geospatial & attribute data in gis. The GIS facilitates integration of spatial and attribute data & this make them unique in contrast to other database system.
the source of the spatial data are digitized maps, aerial photographs & satellite images. Attribute data sources are statistical table & other related documents. Geographic data & related tabular data can be collected by surveying or purchasing from a commercial data provider.

3rd components of gis is User ----- The role of the user are to select pertinent information to set necessary standards, to design cost efficient updating schemes to analyze GIS output for relevant purpose & plan the implementations. The user are always the peoples who plans, implement & operate the systems as well as to make the decisions based on the output.
