The leg drive on the serve is a fascinating subject. Is it a leg drive or a jump at all? When someone jumps they will bend their upper body down and then push upwards with their legs. On the serve, we are in the complete opposite position prior to leaving the ground. Our upper body is bent backward. You can try this at home, try bending backward or arching your back, and then try to push off the ground with your legs and jump. You will find that this is an extremely counterintuitive way to jump. Furthermore, experienced tennis players who have hit thousands of serves will find this way of jumping completely foreign as if they have never served before. However, when executing a serve we effortlessly leave the ground every time. How is this possible? There might be other forces at play.
