The Infamous Clitheroe Case
Chronicle of the Times Episode 55 | 1891
It is 1891 in Clitheroe Lancashire and the whole of England is rocked by the scandal of the husband who had physically kidnapped his wife as she attempts to go to church with her sister.
The event happens in daylight in front of several witnesses. This scandal deepens as his wife is then imprisoned in his house.
This infamous case brought to the fore the question as to the rights of a man and a woman in marriage. Could the husband indeed decide what his wife would or could do? Where was the margin on this? A recent marriage act had changed the law so that a woman did not hand over the whole of her dowry and estate to her husband, so the case regarding the rights of a women were progressing forward, albeit incrementally.
We take a look at the background and events surrounding the infamous Clitheroe case in today’s episode of Scandals of the Past.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
