As climate impacts grow more severe and unpredictable, communities on the frontlines are finding new ways to shape solutions. In Nigeria’s Plateau State, citizens from across regions and backgrounds came together in a locally grounded Climate Assembly to deliberate on climate challenges and co-create solutions directly with government.

Supported by the Climate Democracy Accelerator from People Powered, this initiative led to concrete outcomes — from a state-backed Climate Action Plan to community-led reforestation, sustainable farming practices, and long-term government integration of citizen participation. The experience in Plateau State demonstrates how inclusive, well-designed participatory processes can strengthen climate governance and empower communities to lead effective climate action.
