'Up from Slavery' is an autobiography of Booker Taliaferro Washington, based on the issue of slavery in the 17th-century United States of America. It presents the trials of a man, born a black slave, who went on to become a spokesman and educator for his race. Founder of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, Booker Taliaferro Washington worked relentlessly for the progress of the blacks through education and entrepreneurship. He felt that along with knowledge, one must train one's heart and hands simultaneously, not for selfish individual gain but for the upliftment of society as a whole. He regarded political activism as personal benefit, rather he chose to educate minds in the pursuit of peace, liberty, tolerance and honesty. Washington's wisdom needs to be spread far and wide for a change in the outlook of the people who still possess the prejudice of racism.
