The turtle's shell is connected to his body. It grows larger when the Turtle grows. It's much like a fingernail! As the Turtle gets larger, the shell segments, or scutes, will start to separate and peel away from the shell. Most of the time they shed off in whole pieces! The Turtle must be able to bask in the heat and sunshine to completely dry out his shell in order for them to peel away. If this doesn't happen, the scutes get retained and they will build up, in a pyramid shape . It's not healthy for the Turtle to have retained scutes! Our Turtle, Flash, will be 6 years old this year!
