This year’s Kural is about Reflect Orbital, the company in California applying for government approval to launch a large mirror into space next year. This is the first step in a plan to operate an array of more than 4,000 solar reflectors to boost solar power generation on Earth during twilight hours. Unlike a laser or spotlight, the mirrors will not create a tightly focused beam. Sunlight is already spread across a wide area in space, and when reflected, it spreads further. This means the light reaching the ground will be softer than direct sunlight, but still noticeably bright. This diffused light could help solar farms generate electricity for longer periods and provide temporary lighting during natural disasters. However, bright satellites are already disrupting ground-based astronomy. Space telescopes will also be affected by the reflection from mirror.
