INFORMATION :- MUMBAI: The largest manufacturer of Ganesh idols in the city has all but wound up operations. Moortikar Vijay Khatu's workshop in Parel will henceforth restrict production to only 10-15 large idols as compared to the 115-120 large idols each season.
It was Khatu who introduced 25-30 ft towering Ganesh moortis in Mumbai around 50 years ago. His workshop has been managed by his daughter Reshma after the master sculptor passed away in 2017. Reshma says the studio will henceforth only craft a handful of idols for old-time clients like Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani, Kalachowkie and Grant Road Mahaganpati.A blend of factors have caused the collapse of the brand. Many artisans who worked there chose to branch out on their own after Khatu's death while many mandals also opted for other sculptors. The losses of the lockdown plus the imminent ban on Plaster of Paris in 2023 makes business unviable.OPEN IN APP

MUMBAI: The largest manufacturer of Ganesh idols in the city has all but wound up operations.
Reshma says the studio will henceforth only craft a handful of idols for old-time clients like Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani, Kalachowkie and Grant Road Mahaganpati. A blend of factors have caused the collapse of the brand. Many artisans who worked there chose to branch out on their own after Khatu's death while many mandals also opted for other sculptors. The losses of the lockdown plus the imminent ban on Plaster of Paris in 2023 makes business unviable.

In fact the Khatu family did not rent the sprawling Central Railway Workshop ground in Parel, its signature location, in recent years as expenses mounted. The 2022 orders are being completed at a smaller venue in Bakri Adda, Chinchpokli.
Reshma runs an advertising consultancy which requires time and attention. She said, “This year we are short of time to handle a large number of orders. But I have decided that in the future too, I will keep a bare minimum scale of operations just to keep my father's legacy alive. He himself had said that he would reduce production to 10-15 once the Chintamani completed 100 years.” She said, “Several mandals are disappointed, but I am diverting them to my uncle Rajan Khatu and brother Rohit who are independent moortikars.” Reshma is devising a retro theme for the few exclusive idols that she will carve this year.
Mandals that continue to patronise the Khatu workshop, as well as those that have moved on to other moortikars after Vijay Khatu's death, both wish her well. Praneel Panchal of Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani said, “Our design is secure in Reshma's hands. In fact her father had a grand plan for our centenary, but after he passed away, she took on the mantle like a true professional. We intend to commission our moorti here till she is at the helm.” Pandurang Sakpal, president of Chandanwadi Mandal, echoed his views.
Swapnil Parab of Ganesh Gully Ganeshotsav said their idol was fashioned by Vijay Khatu right until his demise. “After that, we commissioned Satish Walivadekar who was Khatu's student and instituted his own workshop. He would execute our order even while he was there, so it lent continuity to our design,” he said.
