When five officers were shot and three of them killed on Wednesday, a local couple waited to find out if their grandson was among the injured or dead, 17 years after his father died in the line of duty himself.

“We didn’t know if Eli was one of the ones so it took us an hour and a half until we found out,” said David Reever, alongside his wife, Karen.

Their grandson Elijiah Tome was safe, but detectives Cody Becker, Elijah Emenheiser, and Mark Baker would end their watch that day.

“It’s relief but painful because three officers from this department gave up their lives to save a mother, a child,” David Reever said.
