I’ve been a fan of Playboy and The Girls Next Door for the majority of my adult life. One thing everyone associated with the Playboy Mansion has talked about positively is the Hugh M. Hefner Chocolate Cake. To this date no official recipe has been released; Hef’s sons, the former mansion staff and chefs do all agree on one thing: The base of the cake came from a box, either a Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker super dark chocolate mix. When Marston made the boxed cake in question in didn’t taste quite the same. So I got to thinking… what would an industrial kitchen like the Playboy Mansion have done to make the best cake, most consistent cake, and the easiest cake because they’re slammed with the volume of a catering kitchen.
Well, they would have maximized flavor through the method - adding extra fat(flavor) and air and maximizing moisture through easy to replicate processes.
When was the recipe developed, everything I can find points to late mid century 1960s/70s, so what were popular easy to find ingredients at the time. This is when I remembered Holly and Bridget, of Girls Next Door and Girls Next Level fame, talking about how good the frosting was. Ganache was the Queen of all frostings in the 70s, so I chose a Ganache recipe to top this cake with. While Ganache never fully fell out of favor, it would have been more rare to find in the “fat hating” 1990s-2000s so it likely would have stood apart from other cake/cake frostings when our favourite Girls Next Door were having the cake at buffet dinner.
