Kuratsa Mayor - Curacha Samareña (Samar State University)

Kuratsa Mayor or Curacha Samareña (Amenudo) is a popular couple dance in the Samar Island. It is a lively and festive dance with movements that connote the ideas of courtship and flirtation. There is a wide diversity of steps depending on the dancer’s creativity, ability and skill to dance. A good dancing couple draws the attention of the crowd through shouts, cheer and applause thus encouraging them to voluntarily drop paper bills or coins known as “gala” placed on a handkerchief, “nigo” or “bilao” in the middle of the dancefloor as a gesture of appreciation to the couple. At the end of the dance, the “gala” is then wrapped up and offered to the female dancer with the male escorting her back to the table.
