Island Escapades: 3 Days of Adventure in L'Île de Ré, France

Imagine an Island… an island where time slows down.
Imagine being awoken by the sound of the sea,
Surfing the waves,
Cycling through the salt marshes,
Paddling through the wetlands,
Sipping French wines, and savoring fresh seafood.
This island has it all and is the perfect stage for play and leisure, forged by the French “savoir-faire”
This… is the island of L’île de Ré.
This island is held in high esteem by the chic Parisians and the French bourgeoisie. It has a mixture of marine and rural panoramas with vast fine sandy beaches.
We stayed in Ars-en-Ré and found narrow alleys filled with flowers and tiny streets lined with the island’s traditional white houses with green shutters.
The village is built around its Romanesque and Gothic style church. The Saint-Etienne church is listed as an” Historic monument “.
Le “Phare des Baleines” is one of the tallest lighthouses in France.
It is difficult not to notice the donkeys. The Poitou donkeys have had their unique features for at least 300 years. Completely covered in hair a half-a-foot long, they were used to work the land, especially in the salt marshes. Today they are no longer used for labour.
If you are an oyster lover, l’Ile de Ré is the ideal place for the seafood enthusiast. We had to stop at Le Corre family shop and restaurant for traditional oysters. They have been farming oysters in the village of “La Flotte”, for more than 5 decades. Les Copains Babord is a perfect place for delicious seafood and great atmosphere.
If you are a Kite surfer, this is paradise. The location is ideal!
Stand up paddle is also an excellent way to discover and explore nature in the wetlands.
We sure enjoyed our stay in L'ÎLE DE RÉ.
