The name Shimla is familiar to everyone, in 1864, Shimla was declared the summer capital of British India. After independence, the city became the capital of East Punjab and later the capital of Himachal Pradesh. It is the major commercial, cultural and educational centre of the state.

Shimla has several buildings built in the Tudorbethan and Neo-Gothic styles of colonial era architecture, as well as several temples and churches. The colonial architecture and churches, temples and the natural environment of the city attract tourists. The major attractions of the city include Shri Hanuman Jakhu Temple, Shimla Kalibari, Viceregal Lodge, Christ Church, Mall Road, The Ridge and Annadale. The northernmost point of the city centre is Jakhu and the southernmost point is Annadale, the easternmost point is Sanjauli and the westernmost point is Chhota Shimla. Apart from being a tourist destination, the city is also an educational hub with several colleges and research institutes. The Kalka-Shimla Railway, built by the British, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also a major tourist attraction.
