"We passed marriage equality. We have an LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) senior centre right here in Manhattan. There's a time not so long ago when both of those things would have seemed impossible. We are sending a message today that it is not only possible, it is expected and will continue in the City of New York for all of us, but in particular for the LGBT community."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Adams, Executive Director of SAGE:
"So many LGBT elder people do not feel welcome in existing senior centres, because there aren't other people like them and they can't be themselves and can't be open. In many cases they just stayed home or just were alone or they just took advantage of the limited programmes SAGE had to offer. But as of today their services are growing rapidly, which is really exciting."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Adams, Executive Director of SAGE:
"One of the biggest challenges is a lack of social support and support networks. Most LGBT elders don't have kids. Most of them are single, which means as they get older, the family support that others elders have don't exist for them."

LEAD IN :
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT or GLBT) community in Manhattan, New York now have their own drop-in centre for senior citizens and the elderly after the opening of a purpose built community centre.
STORYLINE:
For these elderly people, the SAGE centre is a home away from home, a community centre designed with their needs in mind.
Phyllis Siegal, one half of the first same sex couple to wed in New York State has been given the honour of cutting the ribbon to officially open the centre.
The SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders) is part of New York mayor, Michael Bloomberg's Innovative Senior Centres initiative which addresses the needs of the city's diverse senior population.
Openly gay New York City Council speaker, Christine Quinn says she hopes to be an LGBT senior herself.
SAGE Executive Director, Michael Adams says he's thrilled to see the project come to fruition after thirty years in the making:
The centre offers elderly people from the LGBT community somewhere to come and spend the day, it offers hot meals, medical advice, short courses and access to computers.
