This is the story of Konrad, a humble servant to a wise king. Driven by curiosity, he tastes the king's secret meal—a white snake—and gains the magical ability to understand the language of animals. Falsely accused of theft and facing death, he is saved when he overhears a duck confess to swallowing the queen's lost ring. The king, full of regret, offers him riches, but Konrad asks only for a horse and a little money to see the world. On his journey, his kindness to three fish, a colony of ants, and three starving ravens is noted and promised to be repaid. Later, to win the hand of a proud princess, he must complete three impossible tasks: retrieve a ring from the sea, gather ten sacks of scattered millet seeds, and find an apple from the Tree of Life. The very animals he once saved return to help him succeed, teaching the princess that true wisdom comes from compassion, not power.
