Location- Milemarker 29.00 on Angeles Crest Highway (elevation 2,600')- Angeles National Forest- San Gabriel Mountains- Los Angeles County, Southern California. Bigleaf Maple is in the Soapberry Family (Sapindaceae): formerly maples had their own family (Aceraceae). It is in the section of maples called Lithocarpa, and is not super closely related to any of the other 3 or so maples in California beyond being a maple. Bigleaf Maple ranges from a tall, thicket forming shrub to a very large tree exceeding 100' tall in wetter areas. It is winter-deciduous with a bright yellow to sometimes orange fall color. It ranges from British Columbia and ranges down the coastal side of Washington, Oregon, and the Coast Ranges in California (including So. Cal.'s Transverse Ranges (from Santa Ynez Mountains in Santa Barbara County to the San Bernardino Mountains) and then in the Santa Ana Mountains in Orange/Riverside County, and then very locally into central San Diego County where it is fairly uncommon. It is found more at lower elevations (sea-level to 5,000'), but in Southern California it typically ranges from lower canyons (1,500') to at times over 7,000'. Largest specimens are typically in the Pacific Northwest, but I have seen several in Southern California, like this one here, that get quite large!
