Why does Iceland have some of the cheapest, most eco-friendly heating in the Arctic and well beyond? Partly thanks to the ON plant at Hellisheiði -one of the world's biggest geothermal power plants. It sits between the hot springs of Hveragerdi and Reykjavik – and sends hot water and electricity by insulated pipeline to homes and offices in the capital at a fraction of the cost in countries like renewables-rich Scotland. It's a spooky sight as steam envelops buildings in this empty mountain terrain. But more businesses
are locating in the Geothermal Park beside Hellisheiði to take advantage of its resources.

How does it work, how was it funded, who owns the geothermal resource, how much/little does it cost – and is it safe?

Journalist Lesley Riddoch had a stack of questions for geologist and Science
Communicator Kári Valgeirsson when she visited the ON plant in October 2024 – amidst a volcanic eruption by the famous Blue Lagoon, thankfully far away on the distant horizon.
