India has reportedly curtailed the flow of water through the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab River following the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, sources say. Similar restrictions are expected at the Kishanganga Dam on the Jhelum River. Locals in Akhnoor claim the Chenab has become so shallow it can now be crossed on foot — an unprecedented situation that has shocked residents. The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960, governs the usage rights of the Indus system of rivers shared by India and Pakistan. The recent move comes after a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that left 26 people dead.
