The phenomenon of the home run derby began as a weekly television show filmed at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles in 1960. Due to the tragic circumstances involving the cast and crew, it was abruptly canceled, and barely saw the light of day until the late 1980's, when major league baseball started to include a derby with similar rules as a part of All Star Game fesitivities.
