Indian Institute of Astrophysics - an institution dedicated towards solving the mysteries of the universe. It has been 50 years since the inception of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, where people have dedicated their lives trying to solve the mysteries of the universe. Prof. Subramaniam takes us back to the time when IIA was a Madras Observatory in the 1870s. They made several observations of the sun during the total solar eclipse and a committee was assigned to set up an observatory in Kodaikanal.

The increasing pollution around Kavalur necessitated the need for a new observatory. Therefore, a new site in the Himalayan range was chosen and similarly the site at Hanle was identified. The cloudless sky at Hanle due to the low atmospheric water vapor makes it one of the best observatories in the world. Scientists are building a 30-metre-long telescope that will likely be able to detect any extra-terrestrial life. IIA today is a world class organization.
