St Mary the Virgin Church has been at this location since around 1200 and the cemetery since at least 1300, being expanded a total of 5 times.

The western section of the cemetery consists of around 5000 graves of the people from Prestwich Lunatic Asylum opened January 1851 and closed 1996. There is also 48 war graves from the first and second world wars, a tomb of the brooks family and several other important people such as Sir William Fairbairn the 1st Baronet of Ardwick, Sir William Mather politician, William Sturgeon physicist and inventor. Three botanists are also buried here Richard Buxton, John Horsefield and James Percival.
