Описание к видео What does a psychiatrist do? What kinds of conditions does a psychiatrist treat?

Our New York City Psychiatrist: Robert D. McMullen, MD Wil answer in this video about:
1.What kinds of conditions does a psychiatrist treat?
2. What does a psychiatrist do?

Ever wonder what is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist? In this video, Dr. Robert D. McMullen of New York City, explains why people come to see him and the conditions he treats. He has been practicing psychopharmacology for 35 years. He studied at Georgetown University and completed his residency at Columbia Presbyterian.

Most psychotherapy is done now by social workers or psychologists. When a patient is referred to a psychiatrist, it’s usually because they need medication. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who evaluate patients to determine the kind of treatment they need. If a patient does not need medication a therapist can usually help them. It’s best for a psychiatrist to see as many patients as possible to become experts at prescribing medications and dosages.

Dr. McMullen explains that it is rare for a patient to reach him and end up not needing medication. Most of his patients need help with their brain chemistry. He recounts a visit with a nun who had brought in her friend for treatment. She told him that he had treated her 20 years before and he had taken her off her medication and she has done well from that decision ever since. Although he remembered her name, it was so unusual for him to reduce a patient’s medications that he dug up her old file to remind himself why he had reduced her medications and eventually eliminated them. For this patient, it was the right decision and was still the right decision 20 years later, but this is rarely the case.

Psychiatrists treat all kinds of conditions with medications and other treatments. Just about any condition where the patient needs help with his or her brain chemistry. These conditions include depression and anxiety, including panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), social phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder. More serious conditions include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and schizo-affective disorder.

It can take a mental health professional time to uncover the correct diagnosis. Sometimes the root cause of the disorder is because of a social anxiety. This is the kind of thing people don’t complain about because they’ve been this way their whole lives and they think this is just how life is. A psychiatrist must root out the problem and properly medicate the patient so they can live their fullest life.
