潯陽江頭夜送客，楓葉荻花秋瑟瑟，
By River Xunyang, I see off a guest—maples and reeds shiver in autumn air.
主人下馬客在船，舉酒欲飲無管絃，
The host dismounts while the guest boards the boat; wine is raised but music is not there.
醉不成歡慘將別，別時茫茫江浸月，
Parting dims the joy of wine; the moonlight drowns in river’s glare.
忽聞水上琵琶聲，主人忘歸客不發，
Suddenly a pipa from the river sings—host forgets to leave, guest delays his fare.
尋聲暗問彈者誰，琵琶聲停欲語遲。
We follow the sound and softly inquire—she pauses her tune, her voice ensnared.
沈謐仁：
移船相近邀相見，添酒回燈重開宴，
We move our boat near and invite her to stay—more wine, relit lamps, our feast declared.
千呼萬喚始出來，猶抱琵琶半遮面，
After countless calls she finally appears, her pipa still hiding her shy face fair.
轉軸撥絃三兩聲，未成曲調先有情，
A few notes turn and slide from her strings—before the tune, the soul lays bare.
絃絃掩抑聲聲思，似訴平生不得志，
Each string concealed, each note a sigh, telling of a life of despair.
低眉信手續續彈，說盡心中無限事，
With lowered gaze her fingers play, endless heartache in every air.
輕攏慢捻抹復挑，初為霓裳後六么。
Lightly gathered, slowly plucked—the melody shifts from Neishang to Liuyao's flair.
嘈嘈切切錯雜彈，
Chaotic yet tender, her fingers play—
A storm of pearls in disarray.
大珠小珠落玉盤。
Big notes, small notes, like pearls spilled bright,
Scattering over a jade tray in flight.
間關鶯語花底滑，
Like orioles beneath the bloom in song,
A melody that glides and flows along.
幽咽泉流冰下難。
Or hidden springs that sob through frost,
In frozen stone, their voice near lost.
冰泉冷澀弦凝絕，
Cold spring strings grow taut and tight,
As though the air itself took fright.
凝絕不通聲暫歇。
Then—all sound halts, withdrawn and still,
A hush that bends the night to will.
別有幽愁暗恨生，
Yet from the silence sorrow grows,
Dark grief no voice or witness knows.
此時無聲勝有聲。
At such a time, what’s not been said
Cuts deeper than the words once bled.
銀瓶乍破水漿迸，
Like silver flasks that sudden burst,
And water floods in longing’s thirst.
鐵騎突出刀槍鳴。
Like cavalry crashing into war,
Where blades and spears in chaos roar.
曲終收撥當心畫，
The tune ends—she draws her plectrum slow,
Across the strings with final blow.
四弦一聲如裂帛，
A single chord tears like silk torn,
A cry from threads in silence born.
東船西舫悄無言，
From east to west, the boats fall still,
No word is breathed upon the chill.
唯見江心秋月白。
Only the moon in river’s heart remains,
Pale and bright on silent plains.
沉吟放撥插弦中，
She lays her pick between the strings,
And sits in thought as stillness clings.
整頓衣裳起敛容，
Adjusts her robes, composes face,
Then speaks with slow and quiet grace：
自言本是京城女，
“I was once a girl of the capital's glow,
家在蝦蟆陵下住。
By the Toad Hill, where peach trees grow.”
十三學得琵琶成，
“At thirteen, I mastered pipa’s song,
名屬教坊第一部。
And led the troupes—first rank, headstrong.”
曲罷曾教善才服，
“Even virtuosos paused for me,
妝成每被秋娘妒。
And jealous seniors cast envy.”
五陵年少爭纏頭，
“Noble lads fought to bind my hair,
一曲紅綃不知數。
For just one song, with silks to spare.”
釧頭銀篦擊節碎，
“Bracelets clashed, silver hairpins rang,
血色羅裙翻酒污。
Scarlet skirts with wine were stained.”
今年歡笑復明年，
“Year by year, the laughter died,
秋月春風等閒度。
Spring and autumn just slipped by.”
弟走從軍阿姨死，
“My brother joined the army ranks,
暮去朝來顏色故。
My aunt passed; my youth turned blank.”
門前冷落鞍馬稀，
“No more guests or horses came,
老大嫁作商人婦。
I wed a merchant in quiet shame.”
商人重利輕別離，
“He values gold and parts with ease,
前月浮梁買茶去。
Last moon, he went for tea past east.”
去來江口守空船，
“Since then, alone on this boat I wait,
繞船月明江水寒。
Wrapped in moonlight, the river sedate.”
夜深忽夢少年事，
In deepest night, I dream again,
夢啼妝淚紅闌干。
Tears blur rouge upon the railing’s stain.
我聞琵琶已嘆息，
Hearing her pipa, I sighed aloud—
又聞此語重唧唧。
And more at her words, soft and proud.
同是天涯淪落人，
"We are both lost, cast from grace,
相逢何必曾相識。
Why need past ties for hearts to embrace?"
我從去年辭帝京，
Last year, I left the capital’s gate,
謫居臥病潯陽城。
Exiled sick in Xunyang’s fate.
潯陽地僻無音樂，
Here, no music stirs the land,
終歲不聞絲竹聲。
All year, no strings nor flutes at hand.
住近湓江地低濕，
Low lies my hut near River Pan,
黃蘆苦竹繞宅生。
Ringed by bitter reeds where silence spans.
其間旦暮聞何物？
What sounds do I hear, day or night?
杜鵑啼血猿哀鳴。
Cuckoos bleeding, apes in plight.
春江花朝秋月夜，
On spring river dawns and moonlit eves,
往往取酒還獨傾。
I often drink alone, heart grieves.
豈無山歌與村笛？
There are songs and rustic pipes,
嘔啞嘲哳難為聽。
But their crude sounds offend my mind.
今夜聞君琵琶語，
Tonight I hear your pipa’s tone,
如聽仙樂耳暫明。
Like immortal music, my ears rejoice alone.
莫辭更坐彈一曲，
Stay—play again, just one more line,
為君翻作《琵琶行》。
And I shall write you a Pipa Rhyme.
感我此言良久立，
Moved by my words, she stood awhile,
卻坐促弦弦轉急。
Then sat again, her tempo wild.
淒淒不似向前聲，
Now her tune was weeping bleak,
滿座重聞皆掩泣。
And all who heard could hardly speak.
座中泣下誰最多？
Who wept the most in that hush so deep?
江州司馬青衫濕。
The Governor of Jiangzhou—his robes soaked with weep.
