VENICE, CA — Friday, December 19, 2025 — A coordinated multi-agency cleanup operation moved along the Venice Beach oceanfront Friday morning as the City of Los Angeles continued sanitation and public-safety efforts across the high-traffic corridor.

The operation was led by the Department of Public Works with support from the Los Angeles Police Department, Environmental Compliance Inspectors (ECI), Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Los Angeles Park Rangers, LA County Beaches & Harbors, and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA). Advance notices were posted and the cleanup proceeded under a 48-hour Notice of Major Cleaning. Hazmat specialists removed hazardous materials such as batteries and aerosols; Public Works crews followed with debris and bulky-item removal, while LAHSA teams offered services and referrals.

During the sweep, LAPD officers observed an unattended upright piano on public property adjacent to Ocean Front Walk and initiated an inquiry. The instrument was identified by bystanders as belonging to longtime street musician Nathan “Piano Man” Pino, who typically performs a few feet away within the designated performance area. As officers assessed the situation and sanitation crews stood by, Daisy—known locally as the “Venice Healer”—stepped in to advocate for the instrument and urged that it not be discarded. Crews deferred disposal at that time pending follow-up with the owner.

Friday’s enforcement occurred amid ongoing rules that prohibit leaving large items unattended on the boardwalk or storing them on public property overnight.

These coastal operations remain part of the city’s broader strategy to balance public-space maintenance with outreach intended to connect unhoused residents to services. Santa Monica Closeup will continue monitoring boardwalk enforcement and performance-zone activity.
