The Cadillac ELR is a future plug-in hybrid sports car developed by General Motors.[1] It was first shown as a concept car at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit as the Cadillac Converj.[2] Production is scheduled to begin by late 2013 at the Detroit Hamtramck Assembly Plant.[3]

Incorporating the propulsion system from the Chevrolet Volt—the battery pack, the 120-kilowatt electric motor, and the four-cylinder engine-generator, collectively dubbed the "Voltec" electric propulsion system—the Converj concept has an all-electric range of 40 miles (64 km) and a top speed of 100 mph (160 km/h). The two-door, front-wheel-drive coupe recharges in only three hours using a 240-volt outlet, the type commonly used for large electric appliances.[4] The ELR will use GM Delta II platform, which is shared by Chevrolet Volt, Cruze and the upcoming Buick Verano, and will be smaller than the Camaro.
Bloomberg reported that GM plans to price the ELR "less than the US$57,400 Tesla Model S and that the ELR will be "about the same size as the Volt" and manufactured in the same plant as the Volt.[12] In April 2012 the blog GMInsideNews.com claimed to have confirmed with "product development sources" that the ELR will launch as a 2014 model year vehicle, with production beginning very late in 2013.[13] According to Don Butler, U.S. Marketing Vice President for Cadillac, the ELR will debut at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, and the plug-in hybrid will use a drive train that follows an evolution of the Chevrolet Volt's architecture.[14] General Motors began testing ELR prototypes by mid 2012.
In October 2012, GM announced that the ELR will be built at the Detroit Hamtramck Assembly Plant, together with the Chevrolet Volt, Opel Ampera, and Holden Volt, where the family of extended-range electric vehicles are exported to 21 countries. The addition of the ELR to the plant represents an additional US$35 million investment, bringing the total product investment to US$561 million since December 2009. Production is scheduled to begin by late 2013.
The Converj concept design has won several awards and recognition, including:

Best Concept Vehicle of 2009, Eyes On Design Awards[17]
Most Significant Concept Vehicle of 2009, North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards[18]
Specialty Concept Vehicle of the Year 2009, Southeast Automotive Media Organization (SEAMO)[19]
The Cadillac ELR was selected by Green Car Journal as one the five finalists to the 2012 Green Car Vision Award.
