There are just around 200 sperm whales left in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Their home is the Hellenic Trench, in predominantly Greek waters. The main threat these amazing toothed whales face is being hit by a ship or its propeller. In most cases such collisions are lethal. Every year, thousands of merchant ships and ferries navigate directly through their habitat.

The three main measures to prevent ship collisions with whales are:
1) Re-routing to avoid navigating through their main habitats, such as feeding and breeding grounds;
2) to reduce vessel speed
3) modern technologies localizing whales to alert mariners about their presence can be a helpful complementary measure in areas where re-routing is not possible;

OceanCare has funded the development of the first real-time acoustic observatory for sperm whale localization to intensify efforts to prevent the sperm whale population in the eastern Mediterranean Sea from vanishing. This SAvE Whales system uses solar-powered high-tech buoys equipped with hydrophones to localise sperm whales by their clicking sounds, and transmits their position in real time to relevant marine traffic.

The system Save Whales has been developed by an international and multi-disciplinary team of experts led by Greek researchers from Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute and the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics – FORTH. Other partners of the OceanCare project have been CINTAL - University of Algarve, Marine Traffic, Green2Sustain.
OceanCare has now offered the system to be used and implemented by the Greek authorities in areas where vessel traffic can not be re-routed.
“SAvE Whales” stands for „System for the Avoidance of ship-strikes with Endangered Whales”.
