Nothing in this story is exaggerated. In spite of personal biases, memory shortcomings, and a desire to present you with an interesting story, I did my best to recreate an accurate account of this strange time and place.

All of what you value now will be replaced, displaced, by change. Hold that thought as you see this snapshot of Blue-hole, which is not quite the image that has been burned into my mind. Years and years of growth have begun to re-acclimate the place to its privacy, and so it is not what it once was. Perhaps, for the better.

Oh, and on our return trip, we brought with us a measuring string tied to a weight. We wanted to measure the bridge jump, because we could only guess from on top. Our best guess was around 40 feet. Remember how I said that perspective is way different from up top? Yeah, well, turns out that the bridge is a paltry 30' of air to the water, which is only 8' higher than the tree-stand. It sure feels higher than that!

No way I'm climbing up there, so my measurement to the little branch, based on multiple (conservative) estimates and without consideration of lens aberration, is about 55'. Before you mouth off about the 80' quarry you and your tough-guy friends have conquered, consider that the safety of this jump was an unknown at the time. Further, it requires actual climbing, and you can't even see where you're going to land. As such, any jump's extremity will be relative to more than just a single number. Once, from the old Tunnelton bridge jump into the Conemaugh, where the water was deep enough for me to pencil straight down, I ruptured an eardrum from descending too quickly--and it wasn't anywhere near the height of the tree! Don't tell anyone, but my jump limit now is about 15 feet; but to hear me talk, I'm still pretty confident from the ground.
