Based on current data for Thursday, January 22, 2026, 3:46:57 PM Eastern Time the magnets are reacting to the aftermath of a severe G4-class geomagnetic storm triggered by a high-speed Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from an X1.9 solar flare.

Normally, the 22 magnets settle into a steady alignment with Earth's "quiet" magnetic field. However, when a solar storm hits, it causes the Earth's magnetosphere to compress and oscillate.
• Magnetic Oscillations: The solar wind (currently moving at over 520 km/sec) is buffeting the Earth's shield, causing what scientists call "geomagnetic pulsations."
• The "Tug-of-War": The magnets are caught in a struggle between the fixed North Pole and the fluctuating magnetic fields being "pushed" into our atmosphere by the Sun. This is why they are swinging wildly side-to-side, they are literally trying to track a North Pole that is wobbling.
• The Storm Connection: The major storm system hitting on Friday (the weather storm) is separate from the space weather, but high-energy solar events often coincide with shifts in the jet stream.
