Michael 'Rocket' Blackstone takes Johnny Devecka up in the Marchetti SF-260 for his first look at takeoffs and landings. Managing the massive torque of the 260 HP Lycoming O-540 hanging on the front of the aircraft, the pilot must deliver the appropriate amount of RIGHT RUDDER to counteract the LEFT TURNING TENDENCY due to the rotation of the propeller and low airspeed. This is a concept that every pilot of every piston powered aircraft must contend with, but its more of a factor on aircraft with large horsepower and lighter weights. Becoming a skilled pilot requires excellent use of the rudder pedals during takeoff and landing to ensure that the aircraft is tracking perfectly straight down the runway at all times. The landing is also challenging and requires the proper use of the rudder to take away any effect of the wind, especially a crosswind, and keeping the aircraft tracking perfectly straight when it touches down onto the pavement.
