Описание к видео SOUTH AFRICA: NELSON MANDELA'S/UNICEF'S CAMPAIGN

(6 May 2000) English/Nat
The director of the United Nation's childrens agency on Saturday joined former South African president Nelson Mandela and his wife to call on world leaders everywhere to help put and end to practices that risk the lives of children.
Warfare was the number one threat to children, according to Unicef executive director Carol Bellamy.
She also asked people to remember that the way children are treated during their formative years directly affects the kind of world they will fashion in the future.
Former South African leader Nelson Mandela and his wife, Graca Machel, welcomed the head of Unicef on Saturday for a campaign aiming to improve the lives of children in the third world.
During a news conference they demanded that world leaders in government, business, media, academia and other areas of civil society to use their power and influence to help put an end to the shameful practice of involving children in modern warfare.
Machel authored a U-N report on the impact of armed conflict on children.
UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy also issued a broad challenge to improve lives of millions of children who are affected by poverty, preventable disease and discrimination.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"And to affirm the future, that the future, to manage the future, is inextricably bound up in children's survival, protection and their full development and participation."
SUPER CAPTION: Carol Bellamy, UNICEF Executive Director
Machel said that children were much more likely now than ever before to become embroiled in the violence and bloodshed of war.
She said children were no longer the victims of incidental violence, and were increasingly being pressed into military service by guerrilla leaders.
According to her calculations, at least two (m) million children have been killed in the past decade of conflicts, and at least six (m) million more had been seriously injured.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Children who grow up in a climate of murder, abduction and terror seem to reach adulthood with no idea of what it means to be able to learn to play, to live safely at home with their families, or to socialise with their peers. and so they perpetuate the cycle of war and violence to the next generation and the next and the next."
SUPER CAPTION: Graca Machel, wife of former President Nelson Mandela
Mandela pledged that he and his wife would dedicate their time to building global partnerships of peace between leaders who share his dedication to changing the way children are treated.
He said it was his desire to some day see world leaders held directly accountable for the wellbeing of children.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"There are those who have involved in armed conflict, not for the purpose of serving the welfare of the country but in order that those children should give up their lives for the personal enrichment of the heads of state in those countries. we have to be ruthless against leader of that nature."
SUPER CAPTION: former President Nelson Mandela
Machel added that resources should also be devoted to helping children who have already been caught up in warfare.
She said that education is a very important tool in helping children to overcome the trauma they experience during armed conflict.
