By 1773, the British Empire had a problem. The East India Company — the most powerful trading corporation on earth — was drowning in debt and buried under mountains of unsold tea. Parliament’s solution was the Tea Act.
On paper, it looked harmless. The company would be allowed to sell tea directly to the American colonies, cutting out middlemen and smugglers who had gotten rich by selling smuggled Dutch tea in Boston. The price of tea would fall. For ordinary colonists, it would actually be cheaper than ever before.
But to many colonists, this was seen as a test. The sons of liberty declared – if you Accept the tea, and you accepted Parliament’s authority.
but if you Refuse it, you challenged the Empire itself.

In most ports, the choice was avoided. Ships were turned away. Cargoes sent back.
But in Boston, there would be no compromise. The Boston sons of Liberty declared anyone associated with the cheaper tea would be tarred and feathered, their shops and businesses would likely be ransacked, and the intimidation grew.
Tensions that had been building for years finally reached a breaking point.
