After the Russia-Ukraine war, America and Europe imposed heavy sanctions on Moscow. To survive, Russia needed new buyers and started selling crude oil to India and China at a massive discount of $15–25 per barrel. Before the war, Russian oil was barely 2% of India’s imports — now it’s over 30%.

Indian refiners like Reliance Jamnagar, Nayara Energy, BPCL, and HPCL bought this cheap crude, refined it into diesel, petrol, and jet fuel, and then sold it back to Western countries at market prices. This smart move helped India save around $12.6 billion (₹1 lakh crore) in just 39 months, while also earning extra profit from exports.

Even better, most payments were done in rupees and rubles instead of dollars, bypassing sanctions completely. The result? India and China not only strengthened their energy security but also turned sanctions into an opportunity — making billions while selling the same oil back to the West at a premium.
