A tool in the wrong hands is not helpful. It is hazardous.

Self-help becomes dangerous when people collect insights faster than they develop the maturity to use them. Information without context is not growth. It is fuel for misinterpretation. Psychology calls this cognitive distortion and it happens when new concepts are filtered through wounds instead of wisdom.

People often read powerful ideas and immediately apply them through their own biases. They latch onto one sentence that validates their position and ignore the rest. Without mastery, even helpful tools get weaponized. You see it in relationships. You see it in leadership. You especially see it when scripture or philosophy is taken out of context and turned against others. That is not growth. That is misuse.

Guidance is what prevents this. Mentors, therapists, spiritual directors, and grounded advisors help you understand how a concept actually works and who it is meant to help. They calibrate your lens so you do not harm yourself or the people you care about.

Self-help is powerful. But only when your understanding grows at the same pace as your vocabulary.
