We’re going to look at levels of militarisation through the prism of the 2018 Global Peace Index (GPI). This annual indicator, compiled by the Institute for Economics & Peace, makes the case that economic prosperity is inherently linked to peace. It argues, the greater the levels of the latter, the greater the amount of the former. To do this, the GPI surveys 163 countries world wide.

Our focus, as ever, is on the Philippines in relation to the other member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). The 2018 GPI covers nine of the 10 Asean countries – Brunei is not included in the survey.
