Joseph Kibwetere led the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God alongside other leaders, most notably Credonia Mwerinde. Mwerinde, a former barmaid and self-proclaimed prophetess, played a key role in recruiting followers and shaping the sect’s apocalyptic beliefs.

The cult, which splintered from the Catholic Church, predicted the world would end in 2000. When this prophecy failed, members began questioning the leadership. To maintain control, Kibwetere and Mwerinde orchestrated the mass killing of over 700 followers in Kanungu, Uganda, by locking them inside a church and setting it on fire in March 2000. Initial reports suggested mass suicide, but investigations later revealed many victims had been murdered before the fire.

Both Kibwetere and Mwerinde vanished after the massacre. Their fates remain unknown, with speculation that they either died in the fire or escaped. The Kanungu tragedy remains one of the deadliest cult-related massacres in history.
