You don’t have to take the boring highway from Yorke to Eyre Peninsula! In this episode we turn it into a 4-day detour through the Southern Flinders Ranges, Alligator Gorge and a 4x4 Bridle Track day trip & stay at Catninga Station.

We’re towing our caravan from the  yorke peninsula to the eyre peninsula - but instead of the highway, we’ve turned it into a multi-day detour through the flinders ranges south australia , including  alligator gorge ,  melrose south australia , an epic bridle track 4x4 day trip and one of South Australia’s most unforgettable station stays - Catninga Station, part of Station Stays SA - an incredible example of South Australian station hospitality.

If you’re planning a big lap of australia or touring South Australia with a caravan, this is a caravan-friendly route that links Yorke to Eyre with bush camping, history, gorge walks and real off-road adventure.

Here’s how our Yorke-to-Eyre detour unfolds over a few days:
• Day 1 - We tow the van into a free bush camp near Melrose, in a quiet gum-lined setting between the two peninsulas. After unhitching we explore  mount remarkable national park , walking the beautiful alligator gorge along the creek bed through “The Narrows”, with ancient red rock walls towering above us.

• Day 2 - We visit historic melrose south australia , wander the streets, and call into the beautifully renovated Jacka Brothers Brewery at the base of the Remarkable range, in what’s known as the oldest town in the Flinders.

• Day 3 - With the caravan safely left at camp, we head out on an epic 4x4 day trip along the  bridle track , touring the 4WD track along top of the ranges with 360-degree views over the Flinders and Spencer Gulf.

• Day 4 - We hitch up again and tow over the other side of the range to one of South Australia’s most incredible station stays, Catninga Station bush camping at the base of the Browne Ranges. We’re invited on a private 4x4 tour into the hills, hear the history and stories of the station, and finish at a hut with views as far as the eye can see over the Gulf country below - good old-fashioned outback hospitality.
