The difference between a good ball striker and a bad ball striker has a lot to do with how you work your hands through impact. The same things applies for chipping. A player that has their hands in front of the golf ball at impact and is able to hit the ball and then hit the ground has the best chance of making good contact off any type of lie.

Most players that first come into our GolfTEC centers flip their hands thru impact making it almost impossible to hit down on the ball. When you "flip" your hands, your hands will be behind the ball at impact forcing your club to bottom out usually 2 - 4 inches behind the ball. This usually leads to only good contact out of the best of lies, but usually a lot of struggles out of tight lies and really bad lies. To practice leading with your hands and hitting down on the ball all you will need is a thin stick or as I used in the drill a driveway marker. Place the stick 2 to 3 inches behind the ball. Practice without a ball at first making sure to hit the ground in front of the stick. Once you are able to bottom out in the correct spot continue to use the stick as you practice chipping the ball.
