Описание к видео What Is Resin? | Natural and Synthetic Resins in Art Explained

Resins have been part of human history and creativity for millennia—used not just in art, but in medicine, ritual, and daily life. In this video, we explore what resins are, their properties, and their wide-ranging applications in both traditional and modern art materials.
Naturally occurring resins like amber, copal, rosin, and damar were some of the first materials used by humans. These substances—secreted by plants and solidified over time—proved ideal for use in varnishes, adhesives, incense, and protective coatings. Some were even traded as precious commodities.
The development of synthetic resins in the 20th century marked a turning point. Bakelite, the first synthetic resin, was used in consumer goods and even appeared in art forgeries. Since then, resins such as polyester, acrylic, vinyl, and polyurethane have transformed the landscape of artistic materials:
• Acrylic resin made Magna, the precursor to modern acrylic paints, possible.
• Vinyl resin appears in PVA glues and vinyl-based paints like Flashe.
• Alkyd resins enable the fast-drying qualities of alkyd oil paints.
• Polyester resins are essential in casting, coatings, jewelry, and sculpture.

Today, artists are also experimenting with bio-based resins—renewable alternatives that offer new creative options for casting and coatings.

This overview highlights how resins—natural and synthetic—remain essential to artists across disciplines, evolving alongside technology and creative practices.
