"One of the most important things I think in terms of culture is first to recognize what is the nature of culture loss and what is it that...it's not change that threatens culture per se, these cultures aren't static, delicate peoples that are frozen in time or that need to be preserved like some kind of zoological specimen. On the contrary, these are dynamic living peoples who have been changing all their history. Change is one constant history. And there's nothing wrong with change, change is wonderful. And these peoples are fully capable of adapting and adopting new possibilities for life. And it's not technology that threatens cultural diversity. On the contrary, a Sioux Indian didn't stop being a Sioux Indian when he gave up the bow and arrow anymore than a Canadian farmer stopped being a Canadian when he gave up the horse and buggy. So it's neither change nor technology. If you look around the world, it's always power. In every single case, these are not societies destined to fade away. These are societies being driven out of existence by identifiable forces."
