This is a collection of old clips from the JCMDI archives, many of which have not been published until now. Most were shot in 480p DV (standard definition digital video) and some suffer from poor focus, low resolution, and jaggies/ pixelation. Even so, much of the action captured here is unique and hasn't been documented or published before, so it might be of interest to those studying this species or lepidoptera in general.
This species is the "Electra Buckmoth" (Hemileuca electra), from the family Saturniidae, which is found in the western United States. This documentary project spanned nearly 2 years, with many clips being shot and hundreds of photos being taken.
In these scenes you'll see egg-laying in time-lapse; close-up views of mating; emerging and wing expansion; a female "scenting" (releasing pheromones to attract males); a female vibrating her wings to warm up for flight; and groups of young larvae feeding together on the Buckwheat host plant.
