১ সেপ্টেম্বর শুক্রবার পৃথিবীর খুব কাছ থেকে চলে গেল এখন পর্যন্ত খুঁজে পাওয়া বৃহত্তম গ্রহাণু ফ্লোরেন্স। ভারতীয় সময় বিকেল প্রায় ৫.৩৫ নাগাদ এই মহাজাগতিক ঘটনার সাক্ষী থাকল বিশ্ব।
মাত্র ৭০ লাখ কিলোমিটারের ব্যবধানে ফ্লোরেন্সকে দেখার সুযোগ পেলেন বৈজ্ঞানিকরা।
নাসা জানিয়েছে, সেপ্টেম্বরের প্রথম সপ্তাহ পর্যন্ত ছোট টেলিস্কোপের সাহায্যেই ফ্লোরেন্সকে দেখা যেতে পারে। পাইসিস অস্ট্রিনাস, ক্যাপ্রিকোর্নাস, অ্যাকুয়ারিয়াস এবং ডেলফিনাস তারা মণ্ডলের সামনে থেকে এই সাড়ে ৪ কিলোমিটার চওড়া গ্রহাণুকে সরে যেতে দেখা যাবে। ১৮৯০ সালের পর ফ্লোরেন্স পৃথিবীর এত কাছ থেকে পাশ কাটিয়ে গেল। এর পর ২৫০০ সাল পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করতে হবে বলে জানিয়েছে নাসা।
১৯৮১ সালের মার্চ মাসে অস্ট্রেলিয়ার সাইডিং স্প্রিং অবজার্ভেটরি থেকে শেলটে ববি বাস এই গ্রহাণু খুঁজে পান। গ্রাউন্ড বেস রাডার পর্যবেক্ষণের জন্য ফ্লোরেন্স খুব ভালো টার্গেট বলে জানা গেছে। নাসার সেন্টার ফর নিয়ার আর্থ অবজেক্টস স্টাডিজ-এর ম্যানেজার পল শোডাস বলেন, ‘যবে থেকে নাসার এই প্রোগ্রাম চালু হয়েছে ফ্লোরেন্সই সব চেয়ে বড় গ্রহাণু যাকে ট্র্যাক করা গেছে। এ ছাড়াও বিভিন্ন সময় নানা গ্রহাণু পৃথিবীর কাছ থেকে যায়, কিন্তু তার বেশিরভাগই আকারে বেশ ছোট। ’
