Profile:Norihito Ishii

Choreographer, professional butoh dancer, Artistic Director for Deviate.co

Norihito Ishii was born in Tokyo in 1984.
He is a member of the Sankai juku butoh dance troupe and has performed in various capacities in over 70 cities and 25 countries.
He started 'street dancing' when he was 17 years old and subsequently won accolades in various dance contests.
After performing as a back dancer for different artists and appearing in commercials and at amusement parks, he transitioned to the world of butoh dance in 2006.
His previous experience also includes performing inside and outside Japan with dance companies such as Baby-Q, Kakuya Ohashi and Dancers, Tomohiko Tsujimoto, Dairaku-dakan, and others, while appearing in famous theater productions by Yukio Ninagawa and Amon Miyamoto.
In 2007, he began his solo career, which has pursued the concepts of ubiquitous aesthetics and the mania housed within the modern body as he has created theater and art projects delving into human psychology and the deep truths of society.
In 2013, he was awarded the Jury Prize (later renamed) as the overall first runner-up at the Seoul International Choreography Festival (SCF). After that recognition, he brought the same performance to stages in many countries, including South Korea, Israel, and Singapore. In 2015, he was the overall first runner-up for the SCF Award at the same SCF Festival. He was the first to receive this distinction twice.

In 2010, he joined the butoh dance group Sankai juku, which has Théâtre de la Ville Paris as its creative base and has been called one of the hallowed homes of contemporary dance. The troupe has performed in over 700 cities in 45 countries, with Ishii joining them in more than 70 cities in 25 countries. His recent solo performances with Sankai juku have included Unetsu and Hibiki.
Simultaneous with his work as a dancer, Ishii started Deviate.co in 2012 as a company for producing events, which it has done for several years now.
Many of his recent projects have invited overseas artists from Italy, Spain, S. Korea, and the U.S. to support his work in improving the dance scene in the populous Kanto region, as well as in less urban areas, while giving everyday citizens more opportunities to come in contact with dance.
Ishii's involvement with all aspects of theatrical art branched out in 2016 to include Garando-no Niwa, an artistic performance in the style of an installation or exhibition. Thus far in 2020, performances have taken place inside Matsumoto Parco Department Store.

1984年生まれ、東京都出身。
17歳からストリートダンスを踊り始め、様々なダンスコンテストにて入賞。数々のアーティストのバックダンサーやCM・テーマパークダンサーなどで活躍後、2006年活動場所を舞台空間へ移行。
過去にBABY-Q・大橋可也＆ダンサーズ・辻本知彦・大駱駝艦など様々なDance Companyの国内外の公演に参加する傍ら、蜷川幸雄や宮本亜門の演劇作品にも出演。

2007年よりソロ活動を開始し、現代人の肉体に宿る狂気と普遍性のある美をコンセプトに人間の心理に働きかけ、社会の真理を問う舞台芸術作品を作り続ける。

2013年ソウルインターナショナルコレオグラフィーフェスティバルにて当時の総合準優勝のJury prizeを受賞。
その後、韓国・イスラエル・シンガポールなど多くの国で再演をおこなう。
2015年に同フェスティバルにて総合準優勝のSCFアワードを受賞。初の2度受賞という快挙を遂げる。
2010年 コンテンポラリーダンスの殿堂と呼ばれるパリ市立劇場を創作拠点とし、世界45カ国のべ700都市以上で公演をしている舞踏カンパニー山海塾に在籍し、自身の活動も含め25カ国70都市以上で公演を行う。近年では作品「卵熱」「HIBIKI」のソロパートも担う。

ダンサーの活動と並行して2012年にDEVIATE.CO(プロデュースカンパニー)を立ち上げ、多くの企画を実施。近年ではイタリア・スペイン・韓国・アメリカなど、海外のアーティストを招聘し、関東・地方にてダンスシーン向上・一般市民がダンスに触れるプロジェクトを多く展開している。

舞台という総合芸術に携わる中、2016年より空間美術展「がらんどうの庭」を開催。2020年には松本PARCOで開催した。
