NS 905, a track geometry train (trains that use advanced sensors and computer technology to inspect and measure tracks), passes Union, NJ, heading eastbound on the Lehigh Valley Line. Norfolk Southern uses a variety of unique rolling stock, equipped especially for track measurement. This includes two "research slugs" (#34 and #38), non powered locomotives fitted with computer equipment to inspect the tracks. While they look very alike, #38 is known as "the brick" due to its distinctively square shape and maroon paint scheme. Norfolk Southern also maintains a fleet of track research cars, which, like #38 and #34, are equipped with advanced computer equipment. Some of them are vintage passenger coaches that have been rebuilt. Today's geometry train has an amazing consist. The train is led by NS #8409, an ex-Conrail C40-8W, followed by "the brick", NS #38. Trailing last is geometry coach #36, a vintage coach rebuilt into a research car. Geometry trains are quite rare to see on any Norfolk Southern line, but can be found inspecting about once a year.
